Volunteer Opurtunity

The Shirley-Eustis House, 33 Shirley Street, in Roxbury, has a need for volunteers to assist in many projects. Students are welcomed here as well! Volunteers play an important role at Shirley Place. We need your assistance throughout the year to help us make things happen!

We have interests for everyone – here are just a few:

Education:

  • Teach students about 18th and 19th century daily life. The Shirley-Eustis House provides social studies programming inside and outside the classroom. Students will participate in hands-on/minds-on activities such as making butter, working with wood, and weaving textiles. These programs are taught in 18th century costume and are so much fun! Your reward is knowing that you have helped to be responsible for making the light bulb of learning about that past shine bright for each student!

Be an Historian:

  • Research many historical topics that relate to the history of our residents here at Shirley Place.
  • Research our archaeological artifacts and take photos of our collections.

Learn the Administrative Side of our Museum:

  • Assist our Executive Director in daily tasks such as database input, letter writing, and helping to organize our filing system.
  • Assist our Executive Director to compile a working library system for the books that we have in our current library.
  • Help us put together our new Carriage House Gift Shop! You’ll call vendors and obtain product information for items to be included in the gift shop.

Special Events and Exhibits:

  • Be one of the GO-TO people helping to arrange special events.
  • Become a greeter at our special events!
  • Help us plan, create and maintain our new and existing exhibition spaces.

Interior and Exterior Maintenance Projects:

  • Help to document the perennial gardens and fruit orchard trees for an up-to-date chart that helps to define them.
  • Assist in general grounds clean-up in the spring, summer and fall.
  • You can help us with general interior house cleaning.

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We believe in community involvement and we can all agree that Shirley Place is one of the most beautiful spots in Roxbury! Come learn some history while you are here! Students or other volunteers interested in any of these projects should call the Museum at (617) 442-2275 or send an email to info@shirleyeustishouse.org.
