Our Members Holiday Party featured a beautifully decorated Shirley Place, festive food and beverages, and violin music of the late 18th to mid- 19th centuries performed by Peng Yi. Other highlights will include a Birthday Toast to William Shirley and caroling!
This year’s party theme, “Holidays Glow at Shirley Place”, was inspired by The Season of Light and our magnificent c. 1780 crystal chandelier, which adorns the Great Hall. It is said to have once hung in St. John’s College, Oxford. As a treasured part of our collection the chandelier was formally dedicated to Margaret Eustis Richardson and her late husband Dr. E.P. Richardson, who generously donated it to The Shirley-Eustis House Association in 1985. To mark the special occasion Boston Poet Laureate Danielle Legros Georges read Rumi’s “In Your Light” as well as her own work “Praisesong Boston”. Professor Robert Allison, Chair, Suffolk University History Department, offered a brief summary of the construction of the Mansion and noted that December 2nd had marked William Shirley’s 324th Birthday! Festivities were topped off by a merry carol sing.
